Poisoned Pen Press announces Young Adult Mystery Imprint:
The Poisoned Pencil is now accepting submissions
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Poisoned Pen Press announces the upcoming launch of its first imprint, The Poisoned Pencil.
Founded to publish original, high-quality mysteries for the Young Adult market, The Poisoned Pencil is seeking manuscripts of between 45,000 to 90,000 words in all traditional mystery forms. For full submission guidelines visit: www.poisonedpenpress.com.
Founded in 1997, Poisoned Pen Press has established itself as one of the country’s leading independent mystery book publishers. With over 400 unique titles in print, Poisoned Pen Press ranks as one of the largest publishers of hardcover mysteries in the world.
Jessica Tribble will serve as Publisher of The Poisoned Pencil. Tribble, who joined Poisoned Pen Press after a summer internship in 2004, was named Publisher of Poisoned Pen Press in 2011. She holds a Master’s in Renaissance Literature from Arizona State University as well as a certificate in Scholarly Publishing and Editing.
Veteran editor Ellen Larson will serve as Editor of The Poisoned Pencil. Larson, who brings over twenty years of experience to the table, began her career as a freelance editor working for USAID and World Bank projects in Cairo, Egypt. Larson says her approach to editing is greatly enhanced by being a writer herself. Her most recent story, “When the Apricots Bloom” was published in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine in 2010, and was shortlisted for a Barry Award.
According to Tribble, “Our goal with The Poisoned Pencil is to publish Young Adult mysteries that are fast-paced and relevant to today’s teens—books that adults will also want to read.” The Poisoned Pencil is particularly interested in works with off-beat approaches and narrative choices that reflect the complexity and ambiguity of today’s world.
Broadening the reach of Poisoned Pen Press to include Young Adult readers, says Tribble, is a logical choice for the Press: “Our experience shows that today’s Young Adults are sophisticated and savvy readers who seek good stories well told. Filling this important niche through The Poisoned Pencil not only affords us the opportunity to introduce new works of mystery to the Young Adult audience, but also serves to ensure future generations of voracious mystery readers.”
Editor Ellen Larson notes that she is particularly keen to receive submissions from young adult writers. A long-time fan of juvenile fiction, Larson adds, “Anything goes. As long as the protagonist is between the ages of 12 and 18, it’s Young Adult. I’m excited to begin reviewing submissions, seeing what’s out there, and building our list.”
Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, The Poisoned Pencil projects a Fall 2013 release for its first book. Visit www.poisonedpenpress.com for news and updates about The Poisoned Pencil.
